about Kaoru
I took up weaving and dyeing in Denver in 1991 and have continued studies both in studios and classes in Denver and Tokyo. In 2009 my friend introduced me to Wayne McNeil, a book artist, who became my book-binding teacher/guru. My obsession with colors and papers finally took shape in creating books. Eco print workshop in Houston, TX in 2014 and an online workshop of visual mending in 2015 made a huge impact on my creating style. Living on a land with many trees in Alabama and obtaining vintage kimonos from people around me made me shift to use natural materials in dyeing and weaving and recycle/upcycle old materials in garment making. After 16 years in Colorado and Alabama, my husband and I returned to Japan in May, 2016. I set up a small studio in Fukuoka, Japan, in March, 2017 to continue my creative journey. |
